Three hours of scrolling on the couch and I still felt exhausted.
That's when I realized I hadn't been resting. I'd been hiding.
They can look exactly the same from the outside. Same couch. Same blanket. Same "I just need a break."
The difference is how you feel afterward.
Rest refills you. Avoidance just pushes the dread a little further down the road, and it's usually waiting for you when you get up.
A quick check for this week. Ask yourself:
"Am I moving toward something that restores me, or away from something I'm dreading?"
"Will I feel better or heavier an hour from now?"
"Is there one tiny piece of the hard thing I could do first, then rest for real?"
No guilt either way. Sometimes avoidance is a signal that something feels too big, and that's worth being curious about, not ashamed of.
Parents: if your young adult seems to be "resting" a lot, try asking what feels heavy right now, instead of what they've gotten done.
What actually recharges you? Not what's supposed to, what really does.
